Weighing Capacity
People often select a scale whose maximum capacity matches the weight of the items they usually weigh. This could help you lower your expenses, but there are other things to consider while determining the capacity of the weight scale. For instance, a scale may be rated for 500 lbs, but how much extra weight can you add to it without damaging it? Most of the time, the scale displays a warning message at 102% capacity and mechanical stops can prevent damage at up to 150% of the maximum capacity.
In addition to overload capacity, you also have to consider shock loading and dynamic loading (where items are normally dropped onto the platform). These tasks increase the force the scale has to handle. Case in point, a 500 lbs scale can handle a 450 lbs load but it may not be able to do so if the load is dropped from 5 feet onto the platform.

The readability of a scale refers to how many decimal places it offers to read. Large capacity scales such as a 500 lbs scale (readability=0.1 lbs) have a smaller readability than a lower-capacity scale like a 50 lbs (readability=0.01 lbs). Standard scales can be used for most of the industry-related weighing needs. Some operations require extremely high readability (as much as .0001 lb) and special scales (such as an electromagnetic force restoration model) are used for this purpose.
